Mortal Kombat returns with a new cinematic story mode that follows from Mortal Kombat X. Mortal Kombat’s story have always ended conclusively but this iteration is a bit different, in that there is the possibility of multiple endings. It fits within the game’s theme of having multiple timelines. Read on to find out the differences in the Mortal Kombat 11 Story Ending.
Mortal Kombat 11 Story Ending – Previously on Mortal Kombat…
Following the events of the previous game, Shinnok was defeated at the hands of Cassie Cage. Lord Raiden became corrupted due to Shinnok’s Amulet. He vowed it protect Earthrealm by any means necessary — even if it goes beyond what he would previously consider morally acceptable.
Mortal Kombat 11 begins it’s Story Mode with a scene of Lord Raiden and Shinnok together. Even though Shinnok cannot be killed, he can be decapitated — which is what Raiden accomplishes.
This act summons Kronika, who we learn has the ability to control and manipulate time itself. She also happens to be Shinnok’s mother. Her plan is to stop Raiden from ever interfering with the balance of the Realms, and rewrite history as she wishes.
Mortal Kombat 11 Story Ending – The Build Up
Somewhere mid-way through the story, Liu Kang and Raiden have a disagreement on trust issues. They end up fighting, and afterwards Raiden is enlightened by flashbacks of his fight with Liu Kang in different timelines.
Raiden realizes the power that Shinnok’s Amulet had over him, and this sets him straight. The different timeline was created by Kronika, who now appears before Raiden.
Now that Raiden knows what is going on, he cannot be manipulated by Kronika anymore — at least in this particular timeline. She kidnaps Liu Kang, and returns to her base to begin rewinding time again, to start the process over. The entire group decide to storm after Kronika’s Keep.
Kronika senses that they are arriving, and sends the Revenant Liu Kang to stop them. Revenant Liu Kang had just absorbed the life force from the real Liu Kang, increasing his power level.
Lord Raiden and Revenant Liu Kang eventually fight, but even with all of demon Liu Kang’s power, Raiden still prevails. Lord Raiden does the unthinkable and merges with the Revenant Liu Kang, resulting in the Fire God Liu Kang (FGLK).
Mortal Kombat 11 Story Ending – Possibilities
The entire group arrives on Kronika’s doorstep. Kronika begins the process of rewinding time which reverses the heroes’ invasion. This doesn’t affect Fire God Liu Kang. After fighting a few Revenant cronies, FGLK and Kronika square off.
The battle with Kronika begins at a lush jungle-type environment. Kronika rewinded time so that the Realms once known, no longer existed. This will be the first battle with Kronika, in which Liu Kang’s goal is to prevent Kronika from using the Hourglass again.
If FGLK loses, then Kronika will use the Hourglass once again, and reverts time to the very beginning. The environment will change to being on a rock in Outer Space.
If Liu Kang loses here, then he has failed his mission. But if he were to win here, then he becomes the new Keeper of Time. Regular normal Raiden is here, and will help him usher in the New Era as long as his mortality allows.
If Liu Kang was able to win his fight against Kronika during the initial Jungle arena, he’ll have to fight her once more there. If he wins both times, he will have prevented time being rewinded back to the ‘Dawn of Time‘.
This will result in the best ending of the Story Mode, in which he is able to reconnect with Kitana. Raiden is here with them as well, and they shape the New Era in their vision.
We find out later that Kronika is a “Titan”, and there are others like her. These seem to be similar to the Elder Gods, but with perhaps even more power. This information is also detailed in the individual character endings. The heroes know nothing about them, or why are they are interfering with the Realms. But this will probably be the set up for Mortal Kombat 12.
