Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot Adds New Story Content To A Familiar Saga

Bandai Namco Entertainment is back at it again with a new DBZ game — Dragon Ball Z: Karakot.

From the Bandai Namco Press Release:

Relive the story of Goku in DRAGON BALL Z: KAKAROT! Beyond the epic battles, experience life in the DRAGON BALL Z world as you fight, fish, eat, and train with Goku. Explore the new areas and adventures as you advance through the story and form powerful bonds with other heroes from the DRAGON BALL Z universe.

Another One?

I admittedly have not been keeping tabs on the entire Dragon Ball community, but if I had to guess — I would say that it’s been the same core group that’s known about Dragon Ball for years and years.

Assuming that the core demographic hasn’t expanded in any significant way, it has been interesting to see how Namco Bandai has been able to continue to produce Dragon Ball game after Dragon Ball game using the same old familiar story beats.

There have been so may iterations of the the Dragon Ball Z series, what makes this one so different?

New character: Bonyū

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is designed as an open-world RPG, action role-playing game.  This is great news to me, as I never was really invested into the DBZ fighter-genre titles.

What’s new is that Akira Toriyama has created a debut character for the game: Bonyu.  Bonyu was formerly the sixth member of the Ginyu Force and will have a pivotal role in a side-quest within the game.

The biggest draw for me, however — is that the game is being developed by CyberConnect2.  This was the team behind the 2012 Asura’s Wrath published by CAPCOM.

CyberConnect2 really hit their stride in 2016 with Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4, which was an absolutely memorable game.  They completely nailed the climaxes in the story, and supported it with smaller stories that did well to wrap up the entire saga.

If they can work their magic for Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, I think we’ll have our first major hit for 2020.  It will have all the factors to elevate this game: fanbase, release timing, developer talent, etc.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot will be available on January 17th, 2020 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.  Are you interested in this one?  Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
